About the Role
We are recruiting for an experienced Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) to provide specialist support to high-risk male victims of domestic abuse and interpersonal violence across the West Midlands.
The successful candidate will provide a high-quality, trauma-informed and person-centred service, supporting victims to understand their options, assess and manage risk, develop safety plans and regain control of their lives.
You will work closely with victims, statutory services and partner agencies, advocating for individuals and ensuring their voices are represented within multi-agency safeguarding and risk-management processes, including MARAC.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive referrals for high-risk male victims of domestic abuse and make contact to offer specialist support.
- Complete risk and needs assessments, including DASH risk assessments, and develop appropriate safety plans.
- Provide advice, information and advocacy through telephone, face-to-face and other appropriate forms of support.
- Explain the MARAC process and represent victims' views and needs at MARAC meetings.
- Support victims to recognise the dynamics of domestic abuse and make informed decisions about their safety and wellbeing.
- Identify barriers that may prevent victims from accessing support and work proactively to overcome these.
- Advocate for victims and support access to appropriate services, including criminal justice and protective measures.
- Facilitate group work where required to raise awareness of domestic abuse and promote empowerment.
- Develop effective working relationships with statutory and voluntary-sector partners.
- Participate in multi-agency meetings, safeguarding forums, child protection conferences and other relevant professional networks.
- Prepare accurate reports for MARAC and other formal safeguarding meetings.
- Maintain accurate case records and effectively manage a caseload in line with required timescales.
- Attend regular case reviews, supervision, training and team meetings.
- Identify and escalate safeguarding concerns relating to children or vulnerable adults.
- Contribute to service development, quality assurance and effective outcomes monitoring.
About You
We are looking for someone with a strong understanding of domestic abuse and experience supporting vulnerable people in a frontline setting.
You will ideally have:
- An IDVA qualification and/or direct experience of working with domestic or sexual violence.
- A minimum Level 3 qualification or equivalent training in a relevant subject, such as health and social care.
- Experience working with vulnerable adults and children, including identifying and responding appropriately to safeguarding concerns.
- Experience managing complex casework involving trauma, mental health, substance misuse and crisis intervention.
- Experience undertaking risk and needs assessments and developing support or safety plans.
- Experience receiving referrals, gathering information, identifying risk and determining appropriate onward referrals.
- Experience of multi-agency working and advocating for clients at external meetings.
- Experience preparing accurate reports for MARAC, case conferences or similar formal settings.
- Knowledge of the dynamics and indicators of domestic abuse and interpersonal violence.
- Understanding of risk assessment, safety planning and risk management.
- Knowledge of relevant safeguarding legislation and good practice.
- Understanding of trauma-informed approaches and motivational interviewing.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including concise report writing.
- Strong organisational and caseload management skills.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing competing priorities and responding calmly to unplanned demands.
- The ability to maintain professional boundaries and recognise when management guidance or support is required.
- A compassionate, non-judgemental and person-centred approach.
Essential Requirements
- Must have a full driving licence and access to your own car.
- Willingness to travel as required.
- Willingness to work occasional unsociable hours, including evenings and weekends, where required.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Successful completion of the required DBS check.
